John Neuton and His Time
John Neuton, born c. 1350, was a lawyer, academic, and cleric. He was a canon of York Minster from 1385, holding the position of treasurer from 1393 until his death in 1414. During his time at York, major works were undertaken on the cathedral's fabric and the City was caught up in tumultuous national politics which saw the execution for treason of the Archbishop. At the same time, significant developments were taking place in York's cultural life, and Neuton himself has been credited with helping to bring scholarly interests to the City and helping to establish the Minster as a centre for scholarship.
